Horses are so cool


I just heard about the passing of a big, sweet gelding that taught many beginners to ride and took care of his charges with serious caution. It made me think about all of the incredible school horses and people's first horses and old ranch horses... all the trustworthy, hardworking equine souls who make our businesses and passions possible. Bless them all. When one passes over, it is a loss for us all. I also saw a 30 year old gelding buck a friend off in a spurt of pure sassy exuberance. We should all be so sassy.

New eyes




If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got. This is so true. I have a new horse teaching me to see and do things in a new way. He is the most gentle being I have ever known. He is uneducated by "horseman's" standards but is teaching me to see through new eyes. I have no complaints about how I trained my horses before - I could free longe Darjeeling and Dorje together and halt one (who stood) while I cantered the other, etc. Dalai carried women who had never been near a horse and gave them incredible experiences. I could jump Snookie with just a neck strap. All of the 100+ horses I have owned would come to me across a field, tie, load, etc. All the horses I have trained are/were mannered, confident and aware to varying degrees. I have no complaints. But I have a new horse. And his gentleness is unique. I'm excited about where we will go together.
