A friend was asking me why there are so many different opinions on how to feed a horse (or a dog, or a person) and my answer to this is always the same: It is because all beings are unique and each caretaker has unique experiences to draw upon from past companions or advice from those with such experiences. Someone who has only owned Thoroughbreds will be very much conditioned to feeding and handling in a specific way that is the exact opposite, perhaps, of someone with Shetland ponies. But we can all learn from each other - ways of managing a founder case, or a mare prone to colic will be useful no matter what the breed. So, I have a few guidelines that apply to all horses:
- Never make sudden changes in feed - add new items gradually
- Feed a roughage-based diet, adding energy foods when energy demands are made
- Add fresh vegetables and fruits for enzymes, vitamins, minerals and life force
- Feed sea vegetables to support health and counter toxins
- Add fresh and dried herbs (they would have been there for natural browsing)
- Provide pure, free choice WATER and good SALT
